Washington Post bemoans lack of mob rule.

Okay, I admit that I have been remiss in posting lately. Mea culpa. I told myself that maybe if I took a step back and tried not to let the mendacity that hangs so pervasively in our political atmosphere get to me, that somehow my normally optimistic nature could return.

The November elections, while falling short of what should have been, did bring some solace but the succeeding days only diminished my hopes.  After all, Nancy is still in office and remains the leader of the House democrats. Harry, who of all senators seemed most vulnerable, retained his seat. Barney, Charlie, Maxine, Sheila, and Pete friggin’ Stark were all re-elected! Not many of the powerful dems were sent packing. So the victory is one of numbers not influence. Does that make you confident in your fellow voters??

Add to that the fact that we now have a “weeper of the house” who is third in line for the presidency, and I don’t sleep well at night. Don’t get me wrong. John Boehner is a fine man with good credentials who, as far as I can tell, believes what he says. But he does not exude power. I think Nancy could take him in a fist fight. She would cheat. But he would let her and she would whip him with his own tire iron. Continue reading

Mark Levin on the Tea Party – Then and Now

An inspiring rant on the importance of you… of us… of We The People. It is 13 minutes long but if you don’t have time to listen, then you are probably not going to “get involved” anyway.

Go back to sleep.

Mark Levin.

Treasury Calls It Even After Chrysler Pays Back Portion of Loan

The department said that while the $1.9 billion repayment is less than the original loan, the amount is still more than Treasury had expected to recover.

Let me get this straight. Less than half of the principal and no interest… no problem.

I am going to try this with my mortgage. Wish me luck!

OK, Chicken Little. Give it a Rest.

This is not to minimize the tragedy that is unfolding daily in the Gulf of Mexico. Especially tragic is the loss of 11 lives in this accident. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of these hard-working men.

What is appalling is the media hysteria surrounding this entire mess.

Best estimates say that the spill could rival the magnitude of the infamous Exxon Valdez incident in Alaska in  1989. That accident resulted in releasing 11 million gallons of crude oil into Prince William’s Sound. Current estimates of the BP spill run between 5k to 10k barrels per day with BP announcing today that they are successfully recovering about 20% with a siphon pipe inserted yesterday. BP also says that further efforts to plug the leak are ongoing and, failing that, a relief well could be completed in 60 t0 90 days.

But that’s not good enough for the environmentalist alarmists and the politicians who pander to them. They want BP’s head on a pike to display to the evil oil industry. As the media desperately scramble to photograph an egret with oily feet, politicians rant and rave about new, tougher regulations and want to raise the monetary damage limits to BP. To listen to them, one would believe the the Gulf will soon become one big La Brea Tar Pit.

But, like too many voters, the media and politicos have short and selective memories.

Likewise I have to admit that, until my memory was prodded today by Rush Limbaugh, the IXTOC I incident of 1979 did not come to mind. Don’t remember IXTOC I?

IXTOC I - 1979

On June 3, 1979 in Mexican waters 500 mi. south of Texas a 2 mile deep exploratory well had an almost identical accident. The IXTOC I, a Pemex platform, exploded and subsequently sank. Initially the well gushed 30,000 barrels of crude per day. Efforts to plug the well reduced the output to 20,000 bbls per day. Further endeavors stemmed the leak to 10,000 bbls per day. The leak was finally stopped on March 23, 1980…9 months and 20 days later. In total an estimated 130 million gallons of oil flowed into the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Next to what was spilled by Saddam Hussein in the first Gulf War, this is the largest oil spill in history.

Still don’t remember IXTOC I? Why do you think that is so? It is because the resulting environmental damage was not catastrophic. Incidentally, a hurricane helped to disperse the spill and the US stopped the use of chemical dispersants in US waters. Neither Pemex nor Mexico reimbursed the US for any damages.

All of what I have related here is on the previously offered link. If you follow the links on that page, details are given. Here it is again: IXTOC I

Again I do not want to trivialize what has happened but can we please stop the hysteria?

Navy Seals Exonerated

Matthew McCabe

Matthew McCabe

As an update to my November, 2009 post, I am happy to read today that the last of these brave sailors, Special Warfare Officer 2nd Class Matthew McCabe, has been cleared of all charges. He joins SWO 2nd Class Jonathan Keefe and SO1 Julio Huertas as the third wrongfully accused SEAL to be cleared of all charges. McCabe was the only one of the three to be charged with actually assaulting the peace loving soul who masterminded the horrific event of 2004 in Falujah. The assault victim apparently recovered from his fat lip enough to take the stand for the prosecution.

The three SEALs, unwilling to accept an admiral’s mast reprimand for the incident, opted instead for special courts martial to clear their names. The question remains, however, as to why the convening authority, Army Maj. Gen. C.T. Cleveland, head of Special Operations Command Central, proceeded with the prosecutions.

Just before McCabe’s trial was to proceed, Gerald Rivera appeared on The O’Reilly Factor. While the chief bloviator railed on about how the president should intervene and pardon McCabe, Geraldo held to my view that exoneration would be better than a pardon. He also suggested that General Cleveland was being used as a scapegoat in the whole affair and that the desire to prosecute went higher up the chain of command.

In my opinion, further investigation into this malicious prosecution is in order.
